Artist Statement

I draw upon my life experience and personal history as subject matter for my work. As one of six children to a single, visually impaired mother living in a dark yet "noise" filled house, my search for quiet was a necessary and constant pursuit. Through the process of creating and making images, I discovered silence, solace and the art of telling stories. My figurative works are evidence of an ongoing investigation of memory, identity and familial relationships, most often between mother and child. I am interested in the maternal figure as protector and purveyor of personal mythologies and how these inherited stories perpetuate patterns of thought and behaviors in one’s children. It is often through the child as subject and witness that my voice as an artist is engaged, inspired and expressed. More recently, I have turned to my own image as subject to consider how my experiences as child and now mother have influenced the way I navigate life and relationships.

Jude Harzer Biography

Jude Harzer (American ) is an award winning artist who lives and works in New Jersey, USA. Her figurative paintings are inspired by childhood, memories and the power of thought to define lives and overcome circumstances. Using oil paint as her preferred medium, she creates psychologically provocative visual narratives featuring adolescents as observers and guardians of inter generational mythologies. Jude is the proud mother of two grown children, who continue to influence her work.

Born in 1963, Jude is the third of six children, raised by a single visually impaired mother. She earned her Bachelors degree in 1987 from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Massachusetts and her Masters of Fine Art in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, Georgia.

Jude has participated in both solo and group exhibitions in venues throughout the United States and in Europe. Her works and writings appear in multiple university publications .Before pursuing her studio practice, Jude became an award winning educator and an art director and game graphic designer for an amusement corporation. Jude’s paintings belong to both national and international private collections.
